Ashkar

The Dominion of Ember Law

A dragonborn volcanic dominion ruled through legions and ancient law. Ashkar believes civilization survives only when duty is stronger than fear and law is stronger than rulers.

Varkesh First Consul Rhazek Vaul and the Tribunal of Scale The Codification of the Nine Hundred Laws

Chronicle of the Realm

01

The clans of the caldera ended their blood feuds after the eruption of Mount Ashkar buried three capitals in a single night—the same sky-fire that drove Khazadur's founders underground and scattered the first Orc clans across the red plains.

02

Legate Serath compiled the Nine Hundred Laws after negotiating the Ash Treaty with Gorthak's clan speakers and Khazadur's vault judges.

03

The Dominion conquered the eastern marches of Valedorn but withdrew after Sylvarin pathfinders and Gorthak riders severed its supply lines during the Year Without Flame.

04

The Red Tribunal executed an emperor and abolished hereditary monarchy, replacing it with the current consular system.

Culture & Rule

Culture

Ashkar culture prizes discipline, public service, controlled emotion, and mastery over hardship. Citizenship is earned through service rather than birth, though old legion families retain enormous prestige.

Government

Two consuls share executive authority under the Tribunal of Scale. Written law is supreme, interpreted by judges trained from childhood to recite precedent and detect contradiction.

Faith

The Ancestral Flame, civic ancestor cults, and the divine principle of ordered law

War & Wealth

Military

Professional legions, shield formations, heavy infantry, drake cavalry, combat engineers, fire mages, and disciplined auxiliary cohorts. Every legion maintains its own legal officer and supply magistrate.

Economy

Obsidian, sulfur, volcanic glass, heat-forged steel, salt, ceramics, military engineering, medicinal ash compounds, and control of southern desert caravan routes.

Geography

Volcanic highlands surround fertile ash valleys, geothermal cities, black-sand deserts, and fortress roads. Water is carefully governed, and every cistern is protected by law as strategic infrastructure.

Major Settlements

Varkesh — tribunal capital built across the caldera rim

Legion's Rest — vast military city and training ground

Saar Keth — obsidian port on the southern lava coast

The Nine Wells — agricultural city organized around sacred cisterns

Foreign Relations

Sylvarin: hostile relationship rooted in ancient environmental devastation.

Khazadur: covert industrial trade despite public political opposition.

Gorthak: former auxiliary partner, now an independent rival bound by the Ash Treaty.

Current Rumors and Crises

Three legion standards have vanished from sealed armories.

Mount Ashkar's sacred flame has begun burning cold.

The Tribunal is divided over renewing the Valedorn war.

A newly discovered law tablet appears to invalidate the current government.
